H.S. First Aid Services is made up of passionate, trained volunteers who are dedicated to providing professional, compassionate first aid services at every event we attend.
MFR/BLS
Sam is currently certified as a Medical First Responder (MFR) and is also a Basic Life Support (BLS) provider. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf and boating. He is also a Hockey Canada Level III Official. Sam wishes to pursue paramedicine after high school.
EFA/CPR-C
Henry is currently certified in Emergency First Aid/CPR-C and wishes to eventually become a Medical First Responder (MFR). Henry enjoys the outdoors and wishes to pursue a career outside, such as wildland firefighting after high school.
MFR
Travis is currently certified as a Medical First Responder (MFR). He is also a Volunteer Firefighter with Brookfield Fire & Emergency Services in Brookfield, Nova Scotia. Travis is currently pursuing a career in policing.
Administration/Human Resources
Sandra is currently in charge of office administration and human resources. She is certified in Human Resources Management and Lean Six Sigma. In her free time, Sandra is involved in harness racing on the island. On most Saturdays, you can find her at the racetrack cheering on her horse, Cheezwhiz!
EFA/CPR-C
Colby is currently certified in Emergency First Aid/CPR-C and wishes to expand his scope of practice to Basic Life Support (BLS) and Medical First Response (MFR). Colby enjoys the outdoors as well as working on vehicles, namely his 1990 Ford F-150. He is also heavily involved in racing at Oyster Bed Speedway.
Levels of Training/Scopes of Practice
40 hour training through the Canadian Red Cross/Island EMS
Scope of practice includes:
Airway Management (Artificial Respiration, OPA/NPA Placement, Suction)
Oxygen Administration (Non-Rebreather, Nasal Cannula)
Medications (Naloxone, ASA, Glucose Gel, EpiPen)
Cardiac Arrest Management (High Performance CPR, Automated External Defibrillation)
Trauma Management (Hemorrhage, Shock, Wound Care)
Stabilization (Spinal Motion Restriction, Splinting)
Diagnostics (Patient Assessments, Vital Signs - NBP, HR, RR, SpO2)
4-6 hour add-on training* through the Heart & Stroke Foundation
Scope of practice includes (dependant*):
Airway Management (Artificial Respiration, OPA/NPA Placement, Suction)
Oxygen Administration (Non-Rebreather, Nasal Cannula)
Cardiac Arrest Management (High Performance CPR, Automated External Defibrillation)
*Add-on training in conjunction with either EFA, SFA or MFR training
*Not all BLS courses may include airway management or oxygen administration
14 hour training through the Canadian Red Cross
Scope of practice includes:
Medications (Assisting patient with their own medication)
Cardiac Arrest Management (CPR, Automated External Defibrillation)
Trauma Management (Hemorrhage, Shock, Wound Care)
Stabilization (Splinting)
Diagnostics (Basic Patient Assessments)
8 hour training through the Canadian Red Cross
Scope of practice includes:
Cardiac Arrest Management (CPR, Automated External Defibrillation)
Trauma Management (Major Hemorrhage, Wound Care)
Stabilization (Basic Splinting)
Diagnostics (Basic Patient Assessments)
